UNC Children’s is hosting a grand opening of the Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center, a cutting-edge facility with expert staff dedicated to enhancing the lives of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), a group of rare, inherited conditions that can lead to debilitating physical and neurological symptoms.
This event, which will take place on Saturday, November 2 in Southern Village in Chapel Hill, marks a major milestone in MPS patient care and research at UNC Health.
The grand opening will feature a video showcasing the center’s development, followed by a welcoming message from Kim Stephens, PhD, executive director of Muenzer MPS Center. The keynote address will be delivered by Joseph Muenzer, MD, PhD, director of the Muenzer MPS Center and the Bryson Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, who will highlight the center’s mission and vision.
Attendees will be able to tour the state-of-the-art facility, enjoy live entertainment from a local band, and meet the center’s expert team, including specialists in genetics, enzyme replacement therapy, developmental testing, and clinical trials.

About the Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center
The Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center was established thanks to a generous gift from Vaughn and Nancy Bryson, both graduates of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. It will serve as a hub for innovative research, advanced treatment options, and compassionate care for patients with MPS. The center’s multidisciplinary team includes experts in genetic counseling, developmental testing, and enzyme replacement therapy, working together to deliver personalized, comprehensive care to MPS patients.
“Our goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals with MPS and their families by providing expert care and fostering research to develop new therapies,” said Dr. Muenzer. “This center represents a significant step forward in supporting MPS patients and advancing our understanding of these rare diseases.”
